Domestic Violence Statistics

Statistics on Domestic Violence are alarming, as reported by the United States Department of Justice, and document how often the victims of domestic violence are women:

Approximately 25 percent of women and eight percent of men have been raped and/or physically assaulted by an intimate partner (defined as a spouse, either current or former; live-in partner; or dating partner/acquaintance) at some time in their lifetime (based on 1995-1996 study of 16,000 participants, equally male and female, taken from all 50 states).
Each year, approximately 1.3 million women and 835,000 men are physically assaulted by an intimate partner.
Violence by an intimate partner accounted for 20 percent of all nonfatal violent crimes against women in 2001. In the same year, violence by an intimate partner accounted just three percent of all nonfatal violence against men.
Domestic violence accounted for the deaths of 1,247 women and 440 men in 2000. Since then, 33 percent of female murder victims and four percent of male murder victims were killed by an intimate partner.
In the year 2002, 66 percent of all women killed by firearms were killed by an intimate partner.
In data taken from 1998 to 2002, over 80 percent of domestic violence fatality victims were women. In domestic violence abuse cases that were reported during that same period, over 80 percent of the victims were women.

As these statistics bear out, domestic violence against men does occur, whether in heterosexual or homosexual relationships, and should be taken just as seriously as domestic violence against women.
