The Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) signed into federal law in September 1996 provides for the following:
No state will be required to regard a relationship between two people of the same sex as a marriage, even if another state regards the relationship as a legal marriage.
The Federal Government may not regard a same-sex relationship as a marriage for any reason, even if one of the states does regard it as a legal marriage.
